The first step to creating change

The first step to creating change in your life is usually not change itself.

Read that again.

Change (no matter what it is you’re trying to change) is often uncomfortable, scary, and unfamiliar. So what you need is to FIRST and FOREMOST give yourself the support and safety you need to feel ON THE WAY to change.

Think about a time you decided you wanted to change. Maybe you decided you wanted to lose 30 pounds or leave a relationship. Did you try to change immediately? Did you commit yourself to big lifestyle shift? Dive into the deep end head first? How’d that go?

The quick 180, or cold-turkey approach when trying to initiate change can be jarring and you’ve probably found that forcing yourself directly into change often lacks the support structure and safe-haven necessary to make real, lasting, long term change. People wonder why they were able to lose 10 pounds in a month just to gain it all back the next.

The answer is simple. You bypassed support, love and safety and tried to manhandle yourself to your goals.

Gentle and loving may not seem like the fastest route to get to where you want to be and you’re right. But speed doesn’t equate to safety and you’ll likely end up starting and stopping a million times if you don’t put proper support in place. Sure, there will always be a bit of discomfort when making a change, but when uncomfortable turns into unsafe, it won’t create lasting change, and that’s the ultimate goal, right?

You’ve got this.
